Arukikata

Arukikata literally means "way of walk" in Japanese. The title of this visual documentary comes from a famous guidebook Chikyuu no Arukikata (globe trotter) that has accompanied me for most of my trips around the world. Here you will find info on my travel, study, work and life in different parts of the world. Most of the posts here are linked with videos, publications and/or multimedia contents. I will also backdate some interesting events as time allows. You are welcome to provide comments and feedback. Please enjoy reading.

Amnesia

Early retirement of Amnesia (2001-2006), my colourful and interactive DHTML, Virtools Dev and Flash based website, due to maintenance issues. As a replacement of Amnesia, I have created this visual multimedia-based Arukikata. To make good use of the free storage provided by Google, I have moved the updated PDF documents and multimedia contents, low-resolution photos and videos to Page Creator, Picasa and YouTube respectively. High-resolution photos and videos are moved to Facebook.

Deception Island after Penguin Island

- Down under the icy cold sea water is the tempting warmth of irresistible eruption of joy and laughter.
- Stunning contrast of the cold bluish white iceberg and the black sheltering lava rock and warm ash bed.

Penguin Island

- After 5 days of observing animal behaviour, there is nothing more intimate and intimidating, nesting with 24 Antarctic new comers, in a full house, under an up-side down zodiac, seeing all sort of human behaviour, waiting for radio message a mile away.
- One cannot simply lean next to others to get warmth in windy weather, but by sharing the heart beat and breathe that came over your head and mind.
- It’s always good to have a tenor, an architect, an aerobic instructor and as many chatterboxes as possible in every expedition.
- Beer belly is the best reserve and backup for any emergency situation.
- Filthy, mind-blown, back to the cabin all there is a restless mind.
- In an expedition, it is difficult to tell whether an emergency situation is a dream-come-true or a déjà-vu.

South Georgia, Salisbury Plain, Future Bay

- Nothing in my life is so mind-blowing than seeing ice powdering into the blue sea from a 2.2 km iceberg.
- The vanity of an Antarctic expedition diminishes as the gradual dissolution of iceberg into the summer sea, all that is left is a mind failing to account for the natural beauty.
- It must have been prearranged, to see the beauty of 4 seasons.

Interactive Landscape Planning System

As part of my PhD study in Japan (1998-2001) supported by the Japanese Monbugakusho Scholarship, I have developed a series of interactive applications. These applications enable users from different walk of life to participate in the design process and create alternatives in a distributed environment. This gives roads to an autonomous process in environmental design. Details of these applications and relevant journal and conference publications are included in previous posts.

My first winter in Kumamoto City as a research student in Japanese Architecture. I was so excited to see snow in Kumamoto as the last snow was recorded quite some years ago.
